How can we not talk about women ... in science!

Updated: Oct 27, 2020

Each for equal.

Long gone and forgotten are days when educating women was a 'taboo', gone are days when women were excluded in leadership roles, gone are days when mathematics or science related topics were no girls talk. We have risen and proven ourselves just as relevant in these sectors as the men. I think gender should not be the bases for distinguishing what one can or can not do. One thing that is profound to understand is that, just because a woman fails in a particular thing she was set up to do doesn't mean all the other women can't do it, it also definitely doesn't mean that she failed because she is a woman, men fail too, everyone faces failure at some point, but that has nothing to do with gender.

I stated the importance and applicability of mathematics on an earlier blog. Africa needs innovative people, Africa needs intelligent people, critical thinkers, enthusiasts, self motivated, go getters, task oriented leaders, good and strong communicators... does that sound like I am describing a woman? Of course not. Does it feel like I am describing a man? Definitely not. I am simply describing a relevant person who is fit to take up a leadership role in our countries and organisations and be fruitful, irrespective of their gender.

The emphases therefore is that, blocking women from these positions and roles is stagnating departments which would otherwise not be an issue of concern if women were allowed in. Breaking a 'tradition' though is not something light, it comes with it's cost. You can bare witness with me that people can really be resistant to change, that's why we must make an unceasing effort to advocate for equality and equity, and encourage young women out there that they can really do it and that they are doing it, there is a place for them in science as there is in any other field.

You are not a female doctor, you are a doctor, you are not a female engineer, you are an engineer, you are not a female architect, you are an architect. Science is not a man's field, it is not a woman's field. It is everyone's field. #EachForEqual

Here is what a few prominent people had to say;

Dream, Believe, Take action! I want to see young students realizing their dreams of being the first #African #astronaut to travel to the #InternationalSpaceStation

The 21st century world without female mathematicians is a big loss because women are practically versatile and have the cutest brain to approach and solve challenging real world problems in mathematics.

Looking back at the history of women in science, it suffices to say that encouraging women to get into science has been a hurdle worth trying to go over. With thousands or more of women in Science, we have realized a revolution in the world of science. A revolution that is life-changing; that has made the world a better place. If we invest more in inspiring more women to get into Science, then it goes without doubt that the world will be the ideal place we all desire it to be.
